
Bush was born in Massachusetts on June 12, 1924. At
18 he postponed going to college and became the youngest
naval aviator in US history. Then he went to Yale University,
the same school his father went to. His father was a Wall
Street banker and he was the founder of an oil company.
He became a millionaire when he turned 40.
Bush entered politics in 1964. In 1966, he won election
to become the U.S. House of Representative from Texas.
Bush ran for president in 1980 but did not win; instead
he was chosen as a running mate for Ronald Regan. He was
vice president with Ronald Reagan for eight years. He was
elected vice president twice. Bush served as President
during this time for eight hours while Regan had cancer
surgery. He worked mainly on deregulation and the war on
drugs.
In
1988 he became president. Bush met with the Soviet General
Secretary, Mikhail Gorbachev in a conference. Bush launched
the Persian Gulf War in January 1991. It was quick because
Bush said he did not want to overthrow the Iraqi government
and “incurred incalculable human political costs”.
Bush signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
to encourage trade.
After being president he got to spend more time with his
kids, which he liked. Bush met golfer Tiger Woods July
4,2007. Bush and other presidents and vice presidents saw
Pope John Paul II before the funeral 2005. George and his
wife spend their summers at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport,
Maine. Bush holds a fishing tournament on the island of
Islamorada in Florida. Queen Elizabeth II knighted Bush
in 1993. Bush is the father of the current president, George
W. Bush, which continues the family political career.
