Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Obama, Sr., and Ann Dunham. His father was Kenyan and his mom was American. He has seven half-siblings. Sadly, only six of his siblings are currently living. Obama is a Christian although some people believe his is Muslim.
Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1988. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1991.
After finishing law school, he worked for a year at the Business
International Corporation and then at the New York Public Interest
Research Group. He later taught at the University of Chicago Law
School.
Obama became involved in politics after graduating law school and
settling in Chicago, Illinois. He worked with Project Vote. This
is an organization that sought to registers new African-American
voters. He also worked as a community organizer and for a law firm
with a civil rights practice.
In 1997, Obama was elected as a Democratic candidate from the
Chicago area to serve in the Illinois Senate. He served in the
Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, three terms. Obama was elected
to the United States Senate in 2004.
In February 2007, Obama announced his decision to run for the office
of the United States President. He chose as a running mate for
the office of Vice President another United States Senator, Joe
Biden of Delaware.
Significantly, Obama is the first African-American
nominated by a major political party
Obama currently resides in the Kenwood neighborhood in Chicago,Illinois.
His favorite sport is basketball. He is married and has two daughters,
Malia Ann and Natasha (Sasha). Malia Ann was born in 1998 and Natasha
was born in 2001. Obama recently won a mock election where the
kids pick the next United States President.
