The College
Of William & Mary
was founded in 1693 by King William the 3rd and Queen Mary
the 2nd, in Williamsburg Va. William & Mary is the
2nd oldest college\university. The oldest college\university
is Harvard University. William & Mary is also called
W&M. The President’s House, Brafferton and the
Sir Christopher Wren building are part of the college’s
campus. Before Brafferton was an Indian school. Now Brafferton
is used for offices. W&M is one of the Public Ivy League
schools. George Washington was once the chancellor of this
college. In 1993, it celebrated its 300th anniversary.
Thomas Jefferson was an alumni of this
school. James Monroe (the 5th president) and Mike Tomlin
(Steelers coach) were also alumni of this college. Every
year they celebrate the New Year with magicians, jugglers
and more! They call this celebration First Night. At W&M
you can check out free ipods, laptops, and videos! There
are even two cannons between the doors of the Wren building!
One tradition they do is the president dresses as Santa
Clause and reads “How the Grinch stole Christmas”.
After this, cold students drop sprigs of holly into the
fire for good luck in the Great Hall.
W&M has a newspaper called
The DoG street journal. It is called The DoG street journal
because the main street of Colonial Williamsburg is Duke
of Gloucester Street so they abbreviated it to The DoG
street journal.
People at the William & Mary can make ice cream,
not homemade, lab made! They put liquid nitrogen in a bowl
with other things and they make ice cream.
At W&M, when you graduate, everybody
gets a little model of a brain cell. John Griffin and Pamela
Hunt were the first to start this program.
At
William & Mary they have a program called Meals on
Wheels. It is for people at the Sentara Williamsburg Community
Hospital. Chewing and digesting might be harder for
some people so some meals are labled “dental soft”.
The meals labled “dental soft”, are chopped
up.
