The Events at Jamestown
by Layanne

King James I signed a charter which allowed England to set out colonies to the New World mostly for money. A few traditional scholars of early Jamestown history believed that the pioneers could not have been any more ill-suited for the journey.

On December 20, 1606 colonists set out. It took a few months before they landed. The trip was very brutal to even think about it. One man had died of illness.

On May 14, 1607 the colonists landed on the Jamestown Island . They had made their establishment on the banks of the river they named after their king, the James River, 60 miles away from the Chesapeake Bay . John Smith was the leader of their new colony, Jamestown . He gave the colonists a lot of discipline; they could not eat unless they worked. The Indians and the colonists did not get along too well. In fact the colonists took food from the Indians so the Indians took back. They got so angry at each other that the Indians decided to kill John Smith.

However, Pocahontas, a well known princess, did not let them. When they said it was time for war, Pocahontas explained that all that is ever needed is peace. So, after that the Indians and the colonists lived in peace all because of Pocahontas. When John Smith set sail back to England , the colonists starved. They hardly had any power without him. They did not know that they were not prepared enough for this adventure. They had to take food from the Indians. They thought they would die so they decided to leave. Fortunately, before they left, a boat with another 300 colonists arrived with new supplies and food. They fought to survive and they took food to eat.
