The Landing at Jamestown
by Jamie

One day, May 13th, 1607 in fact, people on three ships saw land! The ships were the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery. The people on the ships hadn’t seen land since December. Some people thought their worries were over. Some people got shovels. Others got pickaxes. ‘’Finally!’’ said the captain Christopher Newport. ‘’Aha!’’ shouted John Smith. ‘’I can’t believe we’re almost there.  We will finally get meat more often.’’ People jumped up and down.  “LAND!!!’’ everyone shouted. ‘’I want the English to stay here forever,’’ said John Smith. “I want to find gold, gold and more gold,’’ said Christopher Newport.

“Land is still far away,” said John Smith, grabbing his telescope and looking through it. “Well now I guess we can sit back and relax,” said John Smith. “It will be about a thirty minute ride to land,” said Christopher Newport easily. “Ah,” the group said together. “I hope this is not like Roanoke!!!” said a big mouth. “Instead of making it we will fail at the last moment!!!”  But someone else said, “Please stop panicking, after that storm nothing worse can happen.” “Gentlemen let us fall into sleep while we wait for the new world to be upon us,” said John Smith trying to lighten the subject. “Let’s!” they all said at once. When they woke up they were on land!!!  “LAND!!!” they said. “What rich soil!” said Christopher Newport. “Come on!” said John Smith running all around. “Let’s start a new town for our King James!”

FACTS:
Jamestown was founded by the English.  It was the first permanent settlement for them in the Americas.  The voyage was tough because the drinking water was dirty, the food was horrible, and the ships were small.  It took the colonists six weeks to get out of sight of England because there was a horrible storm with strong winds just as they left.
The colonists were going there because King James wanted gold.  If they went, they got land and possibly gold. Jamestown had lots of other events but this is where this one ends. Jamestown is still here today. Go visit it.
