Battle
of the Wilderness

The Battle of the Wilderness was fought between May 5th and May 6th in 1864 during hte Civil War. This was the 1st battle in Lt.Gen.Ulysses S. Grant’s 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign. It was fought against General Robert Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Both armies suffered terrible casulaties. It was a bloody battle. The battle was tactically inconclusive, as Grant disengaged and continued his offensive. The location of this battle is in Spotsylvania Country and Orange Country Virginia.
The Battle of the Wilderness battlefield was the wilderness of Spotsylvania. An expanse of impenetrable scrub growth and rough terrain encompassed more then 70 square miles (181 km2) of Spotsylvania County and Orange County in central Virginia.
