George Weiner
by Anu

Mr. Weiner was born in 1949, and he is now a very awesome 4h grade teacher in the Gifted and Talented (G/T) program at White Oaks Elementary School, Burke, Virginia.  He is also the host of a spelling/vocabulary show on television.

Mr. Weiner was born in New York, and also spent most of his childhood in New York.  He was very active as a child.  Some things he liked to do were to build clubhouses and explore the woods behind his house.

Mr. Weiner has had three jobs.  His first job was as a teacher in New York.  He was the only new teacher at the school.  Soon after he joined the school, many families began moving away and as a result, not as many teachers were needed anymore.  Due to these circumstances, Mr. Weiner stayed at the school for a relatively short period of time.
His next job was as a lawyer.  Mr. Weiner moved to Virginia and practiced law with his two brothers for 8 years.  Mr. Weiner liked being a lawyer, but teaching interested him much more.  Then he came to White Oaks and became the well-known 4th grade G/T teacher, Mr. Weiner.

Mr. Weiner’s favorite subjects to teach are science, vocabulary, and current events.
Mr. Weiner wakes up at 5:00 in the morning and reads the newspaper.  He highlights portions of articles worth reading to the class for current events.  This is a terrific opportunity for his students to get a taste of the newspaper reading experience without having to painstakingly read many articles in detail.  Mr. Weiner reads a tidbit of an article, and we have to make up a headline for that article.  Now, isn’t that a really creative idea?
As a hobby, Mr. Weiner likes to play golf. He also enjoys listening to music, and doing things around the house, such as cleaning, and gardening.  And speaking of doing things, his favorite vacation spot is the beach!

Mr. Weiner has a lot of fun and is active with children at recess.  He plays “Phalange Ball” a game where you catch a small ball with only one hand, and if you can’t catch it, you’re out!
Mr. Weiner also plays the piano.  When he meets up with his class after lunch, he plays one song on the piano.  He has played “The Carnival of Venice”, “The Optimist song”, and “The Pessimist Song”.  I think it is nice that we get to listen to what Mr. Weiner has learned.
Mr. Weiner enjoys teaching more than being a lawyer.  Why?  Because he likes working with kids, and he also likes to goof around, and have fun.  He really loves to teach kids subjects, such as, science, current events, and vocabulary.  The part about teaching that doesn’t appeal to him is that teachers are expected to use computers too much.  He thinks that sometimes computers can be too much of a distraction to people.

Even though he knows that this will never happen, Mr. Weiner would like to be in the president’s cabinet.  Mr. Weiner has ideas that could help us deal with the financial crisis and the energy crisis that our country is currently facing.

Mr. Weiner’s really enjoys sharing meals with his family.  He likes to eat and talk with his family, and for dessert, he likes to EAT CAKE!

Mr. Weiner would like to teach 5th grade if he could not teach 4th grade, because, he thinks that 5th grade material is close to 4th grade material.  Mr. Weiner, (if he could not teach 4th grade, and could not teach 5th grade, either) would teach music.
Mr. Weiner is not bilingual, but he does know some foreign phrases.  For example, he knows some phrases in Spanish as well as French.  I like that Mr. Weiner speaks in other languages so we can expand our foreign word vocabulary.
