The Appomattox Courthouse
is called this because there is a county in Virginia that
is only three miles east of the Courthouse. Somebody (I
don’t know who) just added Courthouse to Appomattox
and that is how it got its name.
When General Lee realized that his army could fight no
longer in the Civil War, he sent his Aide-de-camp, Charles
Marshall, to find a place to stay. When he was searching,
McLean offered his home to them. Marshall accepted and
that is how they found The Appomattox Courthouse.
On April 9th, 1865, Lee and Grant held a meeting, which
lasted one and a half hours. During the meeting, Grant
declared that the Confederates were not allowed to fight
against the government. Lee also asked if his men could
keep their hoses and mules. Grant was nice and his response
was yes. Lee inquired that his men were very hungry indeed.
Grant then sent 25,000 rations to feed the Confederate
Troops. This now is referred to “The Gentlemen’s
Agreement. |
